Regarding Needed Therapy

Coaching is NOT Therapy.   Coaching is designed to work on Desired Goals regarding Self-Improvement rather than Mental Health issues, as have been defined in the DSM 5-TR, such as Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, etc.   Licensed Therapists are trained to help with these things.   Those who are needing to work on Processing Trauma or Mental Health issues as are defined in the DSM-5-TR, should seek a licensed Therapist rather than a Coach to help with these things.   Licensed Therapists are specifically trained to help with things things in ways that Coaches, who are not Therapists, are not.

**Coaching requires the Client to have a higher level of mental stability and ability to focus on Moving Forward from the past from the Client than Therapy may require.   Coaching requires a higher ability of the Client to answer questions and articulate desired Goals regarding Self-Improvement, and a higher abilty of the Client to focus on setting and pursuing these desired Self-Improvement Goals, than Therapy may require.

Therapy can help focus on Healing and coping with Trauma that may have happened, whereas Coaching is designed to focus on things one can do to improve oneself and focus on being accountable for one's actions as part of the Coaching Process.   If someone is currently traumatized or having to deal with a diagnosed mental disorder, they may not be capable of the self-accountability and focus on moving forward required for the process of Coaching.   Coaching cannot replace Therapy.

In an abundance of caution to ensure we are not keeping anyone from getting the Therapeutic care they need, we do not work with Clients who are currently in need of Therapy for Trauma or Mental Disorders as defined by the DSM 5-TR, even if they are also seeing a Therapist.

If you are currently feeling traumatized or are experiencing the symptoms described in the DSM 5-TR (i.e., symptoms associated with Depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or other conditions such as Overwhelm and Lack of Motivation; Anxiety; and the various disorders regarding an inability to regulate mood, such as Bipolar and Borderline Personality disorders; or any other the other disorders in the DSM 5-TR), we recommend that you seek Therapy with a licensed Therapist immediately.

Many people stop attending Therapy either because their Therapist declares they are no longer in need of it in regard to "medical necessity," their insurance stops paying for it due to exceeding the number of sessions covered, the person lost their insurance entirely, or they just stopped wanting to attend Therapy.   There are also many people who are in need of Therapy, but who have never seen a Therapist, and who may not know they are "in need" of Therapy.

Many Therapists advertise that they do both Therapy and Coaching.   Many insurance companies will pay for Therapy only as long as the Therapist justifies "a medical necessity" for it, or they limit the number of sessions the insurance will cover.   Due to this requirement, a Therapist may at some point declare that a Client is no longer "in need" of Therapy and may offer ongoing Therapy at personal cost to the Client and/or may offer their Coaching services, which may also may not be covered by their insurance.   Sometimes Clients have other plans with their employers or schools that may cover additional Therapy and/or Coaching.   If your Therapist has told you you no longer quality for insurance-covered services with them, you may want to see if your employer or school offers additional Therapy or Coaching through various benefit they may have.

Addiction is another area requiring a level of expertise beyond what Coaching provides.   In an abundance of caution to ensure we do not prevent anyone from getting the level of proper Treatment they may need, we do not accept as Coaching Clients anyone currently feeling high levels of Anxiety, any level of Depression or Trauma at all, Addiction, or any kind of condition that may keep one from being able to participate in the Coaching Process by engaging in self-examination and articulating desired goals, which is necessary as part of the Coaching Process.

Another category of people who may not yet be ready for Coaching are those who are experiencing extreme levels of Grief.   They may need the time necessary for this to ease, or they may need Therapy to help if time does not, before possibly being ready for Coaching.

If you are feeling any of these things, we encourage you to seek treatment from a Therapist specially trained to provide help for these conditions. &nbps Should these things arise after Coaching has begun with us, we will stop providing Coaching services and advise the Client to seek treatment from a Therapist trained in the area of need.

Another category of people who may not be suitable for Coaching are those who enjoy reading self-help books and learning new information, but who do not want to engage in the self-examination, questioning, and accountabiity that is part of the Coaching Process.   The Coaching Process is not just consulting process where the Coach gives advice.   Coaching is also not just a consoling process, or a process of trying to figure out why something happened the Client does not like.   Those who do not like engaging in self-examination and answering questions should not attempt to engage in Coaching yet.   Coaching is designed to help people make the leap from knowing what they need to do to actually doing it, and many people are not ready for this step yet.   The Coaching Process is designed to help people make changes in their behavior they have decided they want to make.   Not everyone is ready for this yet.

Asking someone to engage in the Coaching process with you before you are ready could be compared to you asking someone to help you do push-ups when you have recently broken your arm and have not had it re-set and put in a cast by a professional health care provider trained to do that.   It is unfortunate that many insurance companies do not pay for more than a limited number of Therapy sessions regardless of whether the person still has a medical need, and many people do not have insurance at all.   But we can no more provide Coaching for someone who is not ready for it than we can set a broken arm for someone who is in need of this.   --It would not be ethical for us to attempt to do things we are not trained to do just because someone may be asking us to do so.

Some Coaches offer the service of Coaching clients who are in need of Therapy, if they are also working with a Therapist.   This is not a service we offer.

We are here for people who are ready and willing to engage in the Coaching process, without also needing Therapy, but not before that.
